From DHD – In the tradition of teen comedies based on literary classics (10 Things I Hate about You, Easy A), a new take on Romeo & Juliet is in the works, and it’s being called Clueless meets Shakespeare in Love. Romeo and Brittney centers on a New Jersey high schooler who finds herself trapped Lost in Austen-style in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet – she wakes up in mythical 13th century Verona with all the people she knows from her high school life playing characters in the play. Trapped as Juliet, Brittney has to break out before the play ends – with her death.
Karen Gillan (Dr. Who) is set to play the lead; Gillian Anderson (Bleak House) will play the dual roles of Gillan’s mother and the Nurse, and Robert Sheehan (The Misfits), will play the school nerd who becomes Brittney’s Romeo. David Baddiel, writer of The Infidel, will be making his directing debut, and Arvind Ethan David will produce. The $7 million feature will start shooting in May.
