From Hollywood Elsewhere – Tony Gilroy, the man who wrote the screenplay and will direct the forth Bourne film, wants to clear up a few points. First, while the fourth movie will be called The Bourne Legacy, it is only taking its title from Robert Ludlum’s book of the same name, not the story. It’s actually an entirely original screenplay. Second, this isn’t a reboot or a prequel, but a spin-off. There is no Matt Damon and no Bourne – the movie will instead feature a whole new hero.
Says Gilroy: “The easiest way to think of it is an expansion or a reveal. Jason Bourne will not be in this film, but he’s very much alive. What happened in the first three films is the trigger for what happens. I’m building a legend and an environment and a wider conspiracy…the world we’re making enhances and advances and invites Jason Bourne’s return [down the road].”
Can a Bourne film without Jason Bourne technically still be called a Bourne film?
I admit I’m a bit disappointed by the Bourne-less-ness, but a spy thriller blessedly free of Paul Greengrass style shaky cam still sounds pretty good to me…
