Japan’s live action feature adaptation of Hiroya Oku’s popular manga looks completely ridiculous and yet still totally awesome.
Since the trailer below doesn’t have subtitles, here’s the general plot: Two students (played by pop star Kazunari Ninomiya and actor Kenichi Matsuyama) die while trying to rescue a drunkard who fell on the subway tracks. When they wake up, they find themselves in a room with others who are recently deceased and a mysterious black sphere called GANTZ. The sphere gives them enhancement suits that endow them with superhuman abilities and tasks them with a series of alien assassination missions. Through these missions they earn “points” toward buying their freedom, but various incidents complicate matters along the way.
The film hits Japan this January and there’s already a second installment in the works.
