Reviving Ophelia heading to Lifetime

Reviving Ophelia, the famous nonfiction book about raising teenage daughters, is heading to Lifetime. First published in 1994, Mary Pipher’s Reviving Ophelia: Saving the Selves of Adolescent Girls became a bestseller and made waves in popular culture due to its subject matter. In the book, Pipher contends that young women remain victims of abuse, peer pressure and demands from society as they attempt to conform to a certain ideal.

From a review by by John M. Grohol, Psy.D.:

Dr. Pipher accurately and painstakingly recounts the recollections of young women she has seen in her clinical psychology practice. The stories most often revolve around high-risk behavior, while touching upon common themes and topics throughout. These range from the usual parental issues of mom and dad, but also on issues such as divorce, drug use, body-image (need to be thin), sex, and violence.

Lifetime has greenlighted the telepic, which will star Jane Kaczmarek (”Malcolm in the Middle”) and Kim Dickens (”Treme”) as adult sisters who must lean on each other when confronted with their daughters’ problems — particularly when one of the teenagers is being abused by her boyfriend. Teena Booth wrote the screenplay, while Bobby Roth is directing for Muse Entertainment. Joel S. Rice and Michael Prupas exec producing.
