War Horse headed for the big screen

Steven Spielberg’s next directing project will be a bigscreen adaptation of War Horse, the acclaimed children’s novel by Michael Morpurgo. The movie is set to be released August 11 next year and is being produced by DreamWorks in association with Reliance and Disney. The book was adapted by Lee Hall (Billy Elliot) and Richard Curtis (Love, Actually) from the original book and stage adaptation. British theatre actor Jeremy Irvine will play the young horseman, Albert. Oscar-nominated Emily Watson and David Thewlis are set as Albert’s parents.

The acclaimed stage adaptation started at London’s National Theatre in 2007 and is currently on at the New London Theatre in the West End. It has been announced that it will transfer to Broadway in November.

War Horse is the story of a horse, Joey, who is sold to the calvary and sent to France to serve on the front lines of World War I, only to be followed by his boy, Albert, who is determined to bring him home.
