Jim Carrey takes on Mr. Popper’s Penguins

DHD reports 20th Century Fox has set Jim  Carrey to star in the film adaptation of the  beloved Newbury Honor Children’s book Mr.  Popper’s Penguins.

John Davis is producing and  Mark Waters (The Spiderwick Chronicles) is  directing with Jared Stern polishing a script by  Sean Anders and John Morris.

The movie version will take the book in an upscale direction – instead of a painter, it will be a high-powered businessman who suddenly inherits six penguins. Popper’s life quickly unravels: his swanky New York apartment is turned into a snowy winter wonderland, the deal he’s long been working on is derailed, and he almost lands in jail, but thanks to his new charges, Popper comes to understand the importance of family, human and otherwise. (No word on if the Penguins will perform or not.)

Book Description:

The 1938 classic tells the story of Mr. Popper, the small-town      house painter who dreamed of exploring Antarctic regions, and      Captain Cook, the redoubtable penguin who turned Mr. Popper’s    world upside down
